A Sense of Community

Community (/k??myo?on?d?/): a group of people who share something in common.

Community can be anything you want it to be with family, friends, organizations, work, etc.

A community is a group of people who share something in common, who have a connection. And it’s not just an entity or group of people, it?? a feeling. The feeling of connection brings people together and helps you feel supported, wanted, and loved. This feeling of connection and community is essential to feeling satisfied as a person. As human beings, we need a sense of belonging, and that sense of belonging is what connects us to many relationships we develop throughout our communities. We’re all members of many different communities, ones we may move in and out of depending on our life’s circumstances or season of life. Often times, community is where we find comfort during difficult times.

When finding your community, you’re often looking for a stronger sense of connection, which begins with self-reflection. Self-Reflection is important so you can identify your needs within a particular community. Understanding your needs will help you find a deeper connection with other like-minded people.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the three most important elements of community are:

  1. Belonging: a true sense of belonging includes the ability for you to feel part of the community as your true self. There’s nothing you have to change or conform to in order to be a part of the community. Rather, you’re embraced and appreciated for your unique qualities.
  2. Support: these are the people you turn to when you need something, the people who help with no questions asked, the people who will be there during difficult times. Knowing there are people who support you helps you feel cared for and safe, and can benefit your outlook on life.
  3. Purpose: a sense of comfort can come with purpose in a community of people filling different roles. It’s comforting to know your role is needed in your community. Having purpose and helping others helps give meaning to life.

I encourage each and every one of you to think about your community and how it plays a role in your life. Take time for self reflection and, if needed, find a new community if your current community isn’t meeting your needs. You deserve to be embraced, loved, and cherished in your own communities.
