Former NFL Super Bowl MVP Gets Depression Remission with TMS Therapy

In a recent article by Treva Lind in Spokane’s The Spokesmen Review, former NFL Quarterback Mark Rypien opens up about his struggle with depression, the benefits he experienced with TMS therapy, and the need in our society to increase dialogue of mental health awareness.

May is Mental Health Awareness month,  just a few weeks away. At TMS Solutions, we strongly believe mental health awareness should be talked about year-round, as “”one in five people will be affected by mental health issues in their lifetime*. As such, we are excited to share a recent success story from one patient who has experienced relief from depression using TMS Therapy.

In Lind?? article, she says ??ypien recommends TMS treatment and increasing mental health dialogue,??and reports ??ne year ago, Mark Rypien went public about his years of struggling with mental health. Today, the former NFL quarterback and Super Bowl XXVI MVP wants to boost awareness about brain injury, depression, and solutions.??/p>

??he Shadle Park High School graduate and former Washington State University quarterback recently talked about what?? helped him in the past year, while pressing for more dialogue on ways to help depression sufferers and victims of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease diagnosed postmortem.??Note:  CTE is not currently indicated for transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment. Only depression or MDD is currently covered by most insurance providers, the VA and Medicare. In this case, where depression and CTE are both at work, the treatment of one eased issues caused by the other.

??ypien and his wife Danielle said they saw a significant difference after his treatments this past fall applying transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a procedure using magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.??/span>

Rypien said “”I started my treatment in September of last year, did it for 30 days, and felt a much-heightened state of mind. It really has been a very positive experience for me. I recommend it to anyone who is wanting to get to a place where they??e not being medicated all the time to deal with their depression and anxiety.??nbsp;

Lind stated that ??ypien said he still takes some medication because of mental health struggles, but TMS caused a noticeable change after sessions using NeuroStar’s Advanced Therapy ??an FDA-approved, non-drug option. The magnetic pulses can awaken areas of the brain that are under-active in people with depression. Danielle Rypien echoed that the couple had tried different treatments, but the TMS option stood out.??/p>

??he goal of TMS is not to get off medication, and indeed Mark is not off medication, so they don?? assume that you won?? need it after; odds are you will,??she said. ??ut the idea is that medication has not done enough. The goal is to get a result where you have less depression, less anxiety.??Danielle Rypien

The article notes that ??lthough the FDA approved TMS as a procedure about 10 years ago, Spokane residents have had limited access until recently. In March (of 2019), Rypien spoke at a public event held by TMS Solutions.””  “”While Rypien isn?? a business partner with TMS Solutions or any such facility but said he thought it was important to tell others about the non-drug depression option.””

Before he began treatment, Rypien saw Dr. Robert Sammons, TMS Solutions??chief medical officer and co-founder.  Dr. Sammons has a practice in Grand Junction, Colorado, and also works with the University of Washington medical residents in Spokane, teaching about TMS therapy and treating patients.
